Bonanza the first colour western was a story about the Cartwrights which were fictional families living in Virginia City Nevada, an actual mining town in the early 1800s. The actor was played by Cartwright, the most junior Cartwright child whose mother Marie was French Creole. She had been widowed when her son died of fever in Episode Marie My Love.
