Her performances in Legally Blonde (2001 and its sequel 2003) as well as in Sweet Home Alabama (2002 ) earned her more recognition. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as June Carter Cash in the musical biopic Walk the Line. After a career slump, during which Water for Elephants (2011) was her only box-office hit, Witherspoon decided to make her comeback, producing and star as Cheryl Strayed, the drama Wild (2014). This earned her a second Academy Award nomination in the category of Best Actress. Witherspoon is still working primarily in television and has performed and produced in a variety of adaptations of literary written by women under the name Hello Sunshine. They include the HBO drama series Big Little Lies (2017-2019) as well as The Apple TV+ drama series The Morning Show (2019-present) and the Hulu miniseries Little Fires Everywhere (2020). The Primetime Emmy Award was won for Outstanding Limited Series in the first episode of the series. She also wrote and directed the movies Gone Girl (2014), and Where the Crawdads Sing (222). She serves on the board of directors for the Children's Defense Fund (CDF) and was named Global Ambassador of Avon Products in 2007, serving as honorary chair of the charitable Avon Foundation dedicated to women's causes.
